Bobcats close out 2016 with a 68-46 loss at UVA-Wise

WISE, Va.Breana Hardnett led the Lees-McRae College women's basketball team in scoring for the third straight game with 15 points, but it was not enough as the Bobcats fell on the road to University of Virginia at Wise by a score of 68-46 Saturday afternoon. The loss moves LMC's record to 1-9 on the season.

LMC struggled to get things going offensively in the opening quarter connecting on just two field goals on 14 attempts. On the flip side, the Cavaliers shot 63.6 percent from the field to open up an 18-6 lead on Lees-McRae after one quarter.

The Bobcats put together their best performance in the second quarter as they outscored the Cavaliers 17-14 to get the deficit to nine points heading into the locker room (32-23). LMC tied the score at 23-23 with a pair of free throws from Martha Mastin with 2:39 to go but the Cavaliers went on a 9-0 run to end the half. Leading the way was Markia Stacey who scored seven of her 14 points in the game in the second quarter. Stacey also shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the field in the frame.

Coming out after halftime, the Cavaliers scored a game-high 21 points in the third to extend their lead out to 19 points after three quarters, 53-34. In the fourth and final quarter, the two teams were fairly evenly matched but the Cavaliers held on for the 68-46 victory.

Lees-McRae will open the 2017 portion of its schedule Tuesday on the road at Southern Wesleyan. The game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start time.
