MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Mount Olive's Daria Simmons scored a career-high 40 points to help her team knock off the Lees-McRae College women's basketball team Wednesday evening, 83-68. The loss drops Lees-McRae's record to 1-13 on the season, while the Trojans improve to 10-3 with the victory.

In the opening quarter neither team had an answer to the other squad's offense. Both Lees-McRae and Mount Olive shot near the 50 percent mark from the field in the opening frame. All of LMC's points in the first came from its starting five with Jordan Soares leading the way with six points. Through the contributions of Soares and the rest of the starters, Lees-McRae held a two point lead on the Trojans after one quarter, 22-20.

Mount Olive got back out front of the Bobcats in the second quarter mainly due to its rebounding efforts. The Trojans out-rebounded LMC 12-5 in the stanza with four of those being offensive rebounds. With the advantage on the glass, the Trojans led Lees-McRae by two, 42-40, heading to the half.

Alexis Ammons scored nine of her team-high 15 points in the third quarter to help the Bobcats remain within striking distance of the Trojans. UMO continued its advantage on the offensive glass totaling nine second-chance opportunities. Despite the work by Ammons, the Trojans extended their lead to five to 45-40 at the end of three quarters.

After shooting 46.1 percent in the game's first three quarters, the Bobcats could not sustain that level of production dropping all the way down to 17.6 percent in the final quarter. That drop in production allowed Mount Olive to extend its lead and eventually seal the 83-68 victory.

In addition to Ammons's 15 points, four other Bobcats finished with double figures Wednesday. Caitlin Brown scored a season-high 14 points. Markia Stacey chipped in 12 points, while Breana Hardnett and Soares both tallied 10.

Lees-McRae will return to action Saturday when it travels to take on Converse. The Bobcats knocked off the Valkyries 76-68 earlier this season. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. from Spartanburg, S.C.
