BANNER ELK, N.C. – Four members of the Lees-McRae College women's basketball team finished in double figures to help the Bobcats pick up an 81-63 victory over Mount Olive Friday night. The win, which is the first for the program over UMO since 2014, improves LMC's record to 6-12 overall and 3-9 in league play.
The Bobcats controlled the pace of play in the opening 20 minutes. The duo of Grace Canella and Mackenzie Blankenship both totaled 10 points in the half to power the Bobcat attack. UMO relied heavily on guard Ni'Ya Styles who scored over half of the Trojans' points in the first with 15 points. With those two factors working together, Lees-McRae held a 38-28 lead when the two teams went to the locker room for halftime.
LMC continued to play well in the second half to down the Trojans ultimately by an 81-63 final tally. The duo of Felicity Havens and Styles supplied nearly all the offense for UMO combining for 25 of the team's 35 points in the frame. Despite the production from those two players, the Bobcats held the Trojans to just 25 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes.
Blankenship paced all Bobcat scorers with 17 points. Brea Forbes and Canella were not far behind with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Meg Crawford also chipped in 12 points to round out the double figure scorers.
Lees-McRae will look to win its second straight game Saturday afternoon when it hosts Barton College at Williams Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. for that game.
