BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's basketball team picked up its fourth straight win Wednesday night at Williams Gymnasium in defeating Converse, 82-69. With the win the Bobcats not only improve to 10-14 overall and 7-11 in conference play but they also clinch a spot in the Conference Carolinas tournament for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
After combining for 186 points in the first meeting, both teams struggled offensively in the first 20 minutes of action. Converse held the edge from the field shooting 30.8 percent compared to LMC's 19.4 mark. However, the difference was Lees-McRae's ability to shoot free throws. The Bobcats went a perfect 12-for-12 from the line with Meg Crawford leading this effort going 8-for-8. Thanks to the free throw shooting, LMC led the Valkyries 29-28 at the halftime break.
The Bobcats certainly righted their offense in the second half boosting their collective shooting percentage up to 44.4 percent. The trio of Brea Forbes, Breana Hardnett and Mackenzie Blankenship combined for 28 points in the final 20 minutes to power LMC's offense. Additionally, the Bobcats went 28-for-35 from the free throw line in the second. Those two factors working together sealed the Bobcats' fourth win a row.
Four different Bobcats finished in double figures in the win over the Valkyries. Forbes led all scorers with 16 points to go along with six rebounds. Hardnett scored all 11 of her points on the night from free throw line, while the duo of Crawford and Grace Canella finished with 10 points each.
Lees-McRae will return to action next Tuesday when it hosts Belmont Abbey at Williams Gymnasium. Tip-off for that contest is set for 5:30 p.m.
