BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Lees-McRae College women's basketball team dropped a key Conference Carolinas contest at rival King (Tenn.) on Wednesday night (Feb. 13) by a score of 92-57.
Game Summary - Alexis Ammons scored the first bucket of the game with a layup, before a King (Tenn.) run left the Bobcats down 9-2 early. Back-to-back layups from Ammons got the Bobcats back within three, before another Tornado three-pointer would put Lees-McRae back down by six. Lees-McRae would battle to back within three with four and a half minutes to play in the quarter, before King (Tenn.) would close the quarter out-scoring Lees-McRae 12-4 to take a 26-15 lead to the second.
The Tornado extended its lead to as many as 19 in the first three minutes of the second quarter, while the lead would fluctuate for the next few minutes. Just past the halfway point of the quarter, Lees-McRae would go on a run over 2:08 to cut the deficit to just nine. Inside the final minute of the half, Lees-McRae would trim the deficit to just seven before two quick King (Tenn.) buckets got the lead back up to 11 before the half.
King (Tenn.) was able to out-score Lees-McRae 25-13 in the third quarter to take a 71-48 lead to the fourth. The Tornado led by as few as 12 and as many as 25 in the third quarter.
King (Tenn.) extended their lead further in the fourth quarter on the way to the key conference victory.
Stats Rundown - The Bobcats shot 40.0 percent (22-55) from the floor, 26.3 percent (5-19) from three-point range and 66.7 percent (8-12) from the foul line in the loss. Ammons finished just two points shy of tying her career-high with 21, while 10 other Bobcats scored in the game. Lees-McRae pulled down 29 rebounds in the game, led by Markia Stacey with five. Brea Forbes led the Bobcats with four helpers on the night.
Up Next - The Bobcats (12-12, 8-8 Conference Carolinas) return to Williams Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 16) to host Barton and complete the season series. Tip-off for that contest is slated for 2 p.m.
