WISE, Va. – The Lees-McRae College women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped Monday night as UVa-Wise knocked off the Bobcats by a score of 82-74. The loss moves Lees-McRae's record back to the .500 mark at 3-3 on the season.
The first two quarters were competitive between the Bobcats and Cavaliers. Neither team was able to get too far ahead of the other as no lead was larger by four points. LMC's Destiny Johnson was clicking offensively scoring 14 points on 5-for-8 from the field to lead the way. Despite the efforts from Johnson and the rest of the Bobcats, it was the Cavaliers that took the lead into the halftime break thanks to a made layup and a made free throw with split seconds to go. Thanks to those points, UVa-Wise led 40-37 at the intermission.
When the two teams returned for the second half, the Cavaliers turned to their low post offense and drawing fouls to gain the advantage. In total, UVa-Wise went to the free throw line 13 times in the second half compared to just four attempts for LMC. Additionally, the Cavaliers finished the game scoring 46 of their 82 points in the paint to help the cause. With those two factors working together, the Bobcats were forced to play catch up the entire second half and ended up falling by the final score of 82-74.
Individually, the Bobcats were led by Johnson, who finished the night with a team-high 22 points. Johnson also paced Lees-McRae with seven rebounds in the contest. The only other Bobcat to finish the night in double figures was Jessica Henderson who netted a career-high 17 points 8-of-11 shooting from the floor.
Lees-McRae will be back in action on Wednesday when it hits the road to take on Lenoir-Rhyne in another non-conference matchup. Tip-off between the Bears and Bobcats is set for 5:30 p.m.
