BELMONT, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College women's lacrosse team fell at Belmont Abbey 18-6 in its Conference Carolinas opener on Wednesday (Feb. 27).
Game Summary - Belmont Abbey scored the first 10 goals over the first 23 minutes and change of the first half, before Beth Haynes got the Bobcats on the board with a free position goal with 6:09 remaining in the half. After a Belmont Abbey goal 15 seconds later, Haynes would cash in on another free position attempt with 1:53 to play in the half. Belmont Abbey would score the final goal of the first half with 21 seconds remaining to head to halftime up 12-2. The Crusaders would out-score the Bobcats 6-4 in the second half on their way to the victory.
Stats Rundown - The Bobcats totaled 20 shots in the game, including 16 on goal. Haynes and Orozco each scored twice, while Madi Barry and Katie Kendrick both netted their first career goals in the game. With Haynes's two free position goals on the afternoon, she moved into a tied for ninth all-time in free position goals in Lees-McRae history with 11. Haynes and Christa Tumminello each recorded assists in the game, with Tumminello's being the first of her career. The Bobcats totaled 16 ground balls on the afternoon, with three each picked up by Haynes and Kat Reeves. Reeves and Emily Davidson each caused one turnover in the contest for Lees-McRae. The Bobcats also won eight draw controls on the afternoon, led by Haynes with four. Kalbie Grassett won two draw controls on the afternoon, while Patterson Jones also collected one. Samantha Thomson made 11 saves on the afternoon, bringing her career save total to 102 and passing Ashley Newman (2006) into eighth place on the all-time career saves list at Lees-McRae. Davidson (0-2) took the loss in the cage, making four saves in 20 minutes.
