Bobcats knock off Chowan for first win of the season

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College women's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season on Saturday (Mar. 30), defeating Chowan 12-10 in Conference Carolinas play.

Game Summary - The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first seven minutes, beginning with a goal from Beth Haynes assisted by Madi Barry to open the scoring five minutes in. With just under seven minutes gone in the first half, Haynes created a turnover before feeding Katie Kendrick who scored to make it 2-0. Kendrick would score again just 14 seconds later, this time off an assist from Patterson Jones to extend the Bobcats lead and force a Chowan timeout. The Hawks responded with two goals to make it 3-2, before Lees-McRae would go on another three-goal run to stretch the lead to 6-2. Unassisted goals from Barry (18:05), Victoria Orozco (17:39) and Haynes (14:24) extended Lees-McRae's lead, before two Chowan goals got the teams back within two goals with seven and a half minutes to play in the first half. Olivia Gilleland would get in on the scoring with a free position goal with five minutes left in the half, before Chowan would score twice in the final two and a half minutes to send the game to the half with Lees-McRae leading 7-6.

Kalbie Grassett scored the first goal of the second half to put the Bobcats up 8-6, before Chowan would tie the game at eight just past the 10-minute mark of the second half. Lees-McRae would pull away in the second half with a three-goal run over just 1:35, beginning with a free position goal from Orozco at 18:52. Orozco would score again unassisted just 13 seconds later, before Grassett would score from Haynes to complete the small run with just over 17 minutes to play in the game. Chowan would get back in the game as the clock ticked closer to the final 12 minutes, scoring twice in 25 seconds to get back within one. Gilleland would score the final goal of the game off an assist from Haynes with 10 and a half minutes to play in the second, before the Bobcats clamped down defensively to hold off any Chowan efforts. Lees-McRae was able to force several turnovers and failed clears defensively, while Emily Davidson came up with several big saves in goal to secure the team's first win of the season.

Stats Rundown - Lees-McRae totaled 26 shots in the game, with 22 of them on target. Orozco led the scoring effort with a hat trick, while Haynes, Kendrick, Grassett and Gilleland each scored twice and Barry also chipped in one goal. The Bobcats tallied assists on five of their goals in the win, with three of them coming from Haynes and the other two from Barry and Jones. Lees-McRae edged Chowan in ground balls 32-27, led by a team-high seven from Grassett. Haynes also scooped up five, while Davidson picked up three. Four other Bobcats each collected three ground balls, while Christa Tumminello grabbed two and Gilleland and Jones each snagged one. Lees-McRae also caused 24 turnovers in the win, with a team-high five each from Haynes and Grassett. Tumminello and Kat Reeves each caused three turnovers in the win, while three other Bobcats registered two. Kendrick and Jones each also recorded one caused turnover in the win. Lees-McRae totaled 11 draw controls in the game, with a game-high six from Grassett leading the way. Haynes also pulled down three, while Jones won two. Davidson (1-5) earned her first career win in the cage, making six saves.

Up Next - The Bobcats (1-8, 1-5 Conference Carolinas) are back in action on Apr. 8 when they travel to Emmanuel (Ga.) for a Conference Carolinas contest. Opening draw is set for 2 p.m.
