Lady Bobcats Beat Barton, Earn CVAC Bid

The Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats traveled to Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference rival Barton College Saturday to close their regular season, emerging with a hard fought 2-0 win. The win leaves the Lady Bobcats with a 6-10-1 record, 3-7-1 in conference play, earning the #8 seed in this week's CVAC Tournament.

The Lady Bobcats started the scoring in the 40th minute when Jenna Simpson took the ball from 30 yards out and made a square pass to Aerial Gregston. Gregston slotted the ball to a streaking Charity Austin (pictured), a local Avery County resident, who buried the goal from 16 yards out. Simpson scored the second goal herself streaking down the right side and burying a shot from 18 yards out in the 64th minute. The Lady Bobcats played the final 35 minutes down a player, but managed to hang on for the win.

The Lady Bobcats win, combined with a St. Andrews Presbyterian College loss, afforded the Lady Bobcats the #8 seed in the CVAC Tournament. The Lady Bobcats will travel to Charlotte, NC to take on regular season champion Queen's University Tuesday evening at 7:00pm in quarterfinal action.

Barton slipped to 9-7 overall and finished 5-6, earning the #6 seed. The Lady Bulldogs will travel to third-seeded Mount Olive.

Lees-McRae finished with five shots on goal, compared to 19 for the Lady Bulldogs, but repeated shots by the host team were either off the mark or saved by senior captain Anita Hekman who finished with 19 saves for her sixth shutout of the year. Ashley Gregory (Wilson, NC), collected three saves for Barton --- all in the first half.

"Winning against a solid team like Barton was extremely exciting, comment Head Coach Renee Lopez. "Anita stood tall today and made some outstanding saves, our defense was solid, and our midfield and forwards lines came out with intensity. It was great to see everything come together to help us advance to the next round."
