Brevard, NC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats soccer team opened the 2007 season with a road game at Brevard College, the first game of the season for both teams. The home side Tornado squad rebounded from an early 1-0 deficit to beat the Lady Bobcats 2-1.
Junior captain Christine Calvert (Dallas, TX) opened the scoring for the Lady Bobcats in the game's third minute to give the visitors the lead as well as some early momentum. Unfortunately, inclement weather forced an hour and a half delay after thirty minutes of play, halting any momentum the Lady Bobcats had generated. After the delay, a pair of Tornado goals by Cherie Haseltin and Carrilea Potter less than ten minutes apart sank the Lady Bobcats as the home side cruised to the 2-1 victory.
"With a handful of injuries, it was a great opportunity for our younger players to gain some valuable experience," commented Head Coach Renee Lopez. "The ladies now know what to expect at the collegiate level, how physical and fast paced the games can be." The Lady Bobcats are currently carrying eleven freshmen and nine sophomores on their roster.
"For now we just to need to prepare for our home opener against King," added Lopez.
The Lady Bobcats will host King College Wednesday, August 29th
in their home opener. The game will be the first of a doubleheader
with the men. Kick off is set for 5:00pm.
