CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- Emily Jones (Leonardtown, Md.) tallied her third goal of the season, and Brittany Bolton (Roanoke, Va.) made four saves to lead the Lees-McRae College women's soccer team to a 1-0 clean sheet against Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday evening in Conference Carolinas play.
Lees-McRae (9-3, 5-2 CC) outshot the Royals (5-6, 5-2 CC) by a 14-6 margin, including an 8-3 advantage in the first half as the Lady Bobcats tallied their sixth win in their last seven matches. Jones recorded the lone goal of the match, as MaryBeth Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) and Kaitlyn Kerrigan (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.) each notched an assist on the strike.
The match remained scoreless until midway through the 29th minute when Kerrigan delivered a corner kick to Sullivan, who then fed Jones for the finish inside the Queens area for what would prove to be the match-winner.
Queens made a push up the pitch early in the second half, forcing Bolton to make a pair of crucial saves in the 48th and 49th minutes to preserve the clean sheet. Bolton would make another critical save midway through the 76th minute, stopping a skillful effort from the Royals' Kristen Wright (Salisbury, Md.) to maintain the LMC lead.
The Lady Bobcats nearly doubled the advantage in the closing minutes of the match, forcing the Royals to clear a pair of shots off the line in the 86th minute to mark the final offensive push of the contest.
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Tuesday when the Lady Bobcats travel to Wingate, N.C. for a pivotal non-conference matchup with Wingate University. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
