Wingate rallies past Lady Bobcats, 3-2

WINGATE, N.C. --- Emily Jones (Leonardtown, Md.) scored her fourth goal of the season, and added an assist as the Lees-McRae College women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to Wingate University on Tuesday night by a score of 3-2.

Wingate (7-1-3) outshot the Lady Bobcats (9-4-0) by an 18-5 margin in the match, including a 9-2 advantage in the second half. Jones led the way for Lees-McRae with a goal and an assist, as MaryBeth Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) tallied her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Vickie Rich (Arlington Heights, Ill.) also notched an assist in the contest.

Kerstin Williams (Summerville, S.C.) paced the Bulldogs with two goals, including the match-winner, while also tallying an assist. Hannah Holsclaw (Matthews, N.C.) added a goal of her own for Wingate, as Meghan Mastalerz (Elkridge, Md.) chipped in wtih an assist.

Wiliiams opened the scoring midway through the 14th minute, knocking a header into the back of the net off a well-struck corner from Mastalerz, giving Wingate an early 1-0 lead. Lees-McRae would answer in the opening seconds of the following minute, evening the score at 1-1 when Jones took a cross from Rich and slotted it past the keeper for her fourth tally of the season.

The match would remain level through the intermission, and over half of the second period, until Sullivan broke the deadlock in the closing moments of the 72nd minute with her seventh goal of the season to give LMC a 2-1 lead. After Jones delivered a wonderful long ball to the streaking midfielder, Sullivan beat the keeper and tucked away the finish to give the Lady Bobcats their first lead of the match

Wingate would answer midway through the 78th minute, pulling back on terms when Holsclaw took a cross from Williams and directed a header past the LMC keeper to square the match at 2-2. The Bulldogs would complete the comeback with little time to spare, as Williams unleashed a blistering shot from distance midway through the 88th minute for the match-winner.

Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Friday when the Lady Bobcats host Brevard College in a non-conference matchup. The match is slated for 5 p.m. at Tate Field.
