DUE WEST, S.C. --- MaryBeth Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season to lead the Lees-McRae College women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Erskine College on Tuesday night in Conference Carolinas play.
Lees-McRae (12-5, 7-2 CC) outshot the Flying Fleet (5-11, 3-6 CC) by a 27-6 margin, including a 14-2 advantage in the first half, as the Lady Bobcats clinched a top-four finish in the conference standings since the 2003 season. Sullivan, Kaitlyn Kerrigan (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.), Vickie Rich (Arlington Heights, Ill.), and Abby White (Madisonville, Tenn.) each tallied a goal, while Katelyn Custer (Mooresville, N.C.) and Jessica O'Leary (Milbury, Mass.) both recorded an assist.
The match remained scoreless until the closing moments of the 26th minute, when Rich made a run into the area and delivered a lofted ball over the Erskine keeper to give Lees-McRae an early 1-0 lead. Kerrigan doubled the advantage just before the half, bending in a free kick from 25 yards distance in the 43rd minute to send the Lady Bobcats into the interval with a 2-0 lead.
Sullivan stretched the lead to 3-0 late in the 79th minute, taking a cross from O'Leary and tucking the finish into the bottom corner from close range for her team-leading ninth tally of the season. Erskine would cut the margin to 3-1 just over a minute later, when Victoria Bruce (Gladehill, Va.) took a cross from Casey Craft (Anderson, S.C.) and sent the finish into the upper 90 for her fourth goal of the campaign.
White answered for the Lady Bobcats late in the 88th minute, tallying her first goal of the season off a rebound following a shot by Custer to stretch the lead to 4-1. Brittany Bolton (Roanoke, Va.) made three saves for the Lady Bobcats in the match, while Si'Ara Washington (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) stopped 12 shots for the Flying Fleet.
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Saturday when the Lady Bobcats host Coker College to close out the conference and regular season. The match is slated to kick off at 3:30 p.m. at Tate Field following the conclusion of LMC's Senior Day festivities.
