BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Sophomore MaryBeth Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.) found the back of the net early in the first half to lead the Lees-McRae College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Belmont Abbey College in a pivotal Conference Carolinas matchup on Wednesday night on Tate Field.

Lees-McRae (9-2-1, 8-0 CC) outshot Belmont Abbey (7-7, 6-2 CC) by a 13-5 margin, including an 8-1 advantage in the second half, as the Bobcats took a one-game lead in the conference standings with Queens University of Charlotte's 2-1 victory over Mount Olive College. Freshman Kaitlyn Briggs (Oviedo, Fla.) kept a clean sheet with four saves, registering her seventh shutout of the season.

Sullivan tallied the lone goal of the match late in the 14th minute, taking a headed through ball from Santerre and sending a brilliant finish over the keeper to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. The score line read 1-0 for the duration of the match, as the Bobcats nearly doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the 65th minute when Thornton made a terrific run into the area before sending the finish just wide of the woodwork.
