Dorn earns NSCAA Academic all-South Region honors
KANSAS CITY, Kan. --- Lees-McRae College senior Mary Dorn (Shallotte, N.C.) earned a spot on the 2012 NSCAA Women's Soccer College Scholar all-South team for the second year in a row, announced NSCAA officials Friday.
Dorn garnered second-team recognition for the second time in her career, becoming the first player in program history to earn multiple scholar honors from the NSCAA. Armstrong Atlantic State University and Lee University each paced the South region with four selections, as Hardin University added three. Trinity University, Columbus State University, University of Central Oklahoma, and University of North Carolina – Pembroke each placed two student-athletes on the team.
A native of Shallotte, N.C., Dorn led the Bobcats to their second consecutive Conference Carolinas regular season title this fall, earning the league's inaugural Defensive Player of the Year honors while also being named the Conference Carolinas Scholar Athlete of the Year. The senior defender directed the Bobcat backline to four clean sheets in league play, recording two goals and two assists thus far en route to a third consecutive spot on the all-conference first team.
Dorn has helped Lees-McRae record 27 shutouts in her career, including 12 clean sheets in 2010 to lead the Bobcats to the program's first-ever Conference Carolinas Tournament title and the school's first berth in the NCAA Tournament. Dorn currently sports a cumulative grade point average of 3.70, and is expected to graduate with a bachelor's degree in accounting.
Lees-McRae is expected to return 18 letter-winners from this year's Conference Carolinas regular season championship squad, including rising seniors Kaitlyn Kerrigan (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.), Alicia Pierson (Brooksville, Fla.), LeeAnn Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.), and MaryBeth Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.).
