Lees-McRae picked second in Conference Carolinas Preseason Poll
HIGH POINT, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College women's soccer team, winners of the last two Conference Carolinas regular season championships, has been picked to finish second in the race for the 2013 league crown announced conference officials Tuesday.
Belmont Abbey College is picked first in the poll, receiving five first-place votes and 75 points after winning the conference tournament and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Lees-McRae is second with 70 points and two first-place votes, followed by Limestone College with one first-place vote and 66 points.
Pfeiffer University is fourth with two first-place votes and 64 points, followed by Mount Olive College (48), King University (36), Converse College (34), Erskine College (24), Barton College (17), and North Greenville University (16).
"It is going to be another exciting year in Conference Carolinas, especially with the new conference layout," said head coach Nick Whiting. "We return a strong team and look forward to building off of last season's championship run."
Lees-McRae enters the season primed to make a run at its third straight Conference Carolinas regular season title, returning 14 letter-winners while welcoming 11 talented newcomers into the fold this fall. The Bobcats finished the 2012 season 12-5-2 overall and 11-1 in conference play, with their only league loss coming on the road to Queens University of Charlotte.
Under the direction of Whiting and leadership of seniors Alicia Pierson (Brooksville, N.C.), LeeAnn Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.), MaryBeth Sullivan (Greensboro, N.C.), and Kaitlyn Kerrigan (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.), the Bobcats will look to continue their rise among the conference and Southeast region powers this season.
Lees-McRae opens the 2013 campaign on Friday, September 6 when the Bobcats travel to Hickory, N.C. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne University in the first match of the Lenoir-Rhyne Classic at 7:30 p.m.
