Briggs Breaks Shutout Record, Thornton Scores Twice in Handling of Southern Wesleyan, 5-0

CENTRAL, S.C. --- Senior Kaitlyn Briggs set a school record with her 22nd career shutout and senior teammate Meagan Thornton tallied two goals and an assist  while the Lees-McRae women's soccer team battered Southern Wesleyan, 5-0, in Conference Carolinas action Wednesday evening at Childs Field in Central, S.C.

The Bobcats (2-3, 2-0 CC) notched their second consecutive win while taking an eye-popping 38 shots on the evening. The Warriors (0-5, 0-2) managed only seven shots while Courtney McNeil recorded 13 saves.

Junior Sarah Mahar (Jacksonville, Fla.) notched her first goal of the season in the 11th minute while Thornton (Millville, N.J.) dished out the assist.

Kelsey Twigg (Barrie, Ontario, Canada) continued her impressive freshman campaign when she beat McNeil on the lower right to extend the LMC lead, 2-0.

The Bobcats put the match out of reach with two goals in 18 seconds during the early stanza of the second half.

Thornton blasted a shot to the lower left at the 57:45 mark before junior Erica Allen (Norton, Ohio) retrieved a pass from Mahar at 58:03.

Allen scored her second goal in as many matches while Mahar claimed the assist on both of them.

Mahar found Thornton from 18 yards out to make it 5-0 in the 77th minute.

Thornton led both teams with eight shots, including five on goal. Junior Molly Ames (Greensboro, N.C.) and Mahar registered six shots each.

Briggs notched her first shutout of the season while earning two saves.

SWU's Grace Taylor paced the home team with four shots.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. for their home opener when welcoming Pfeiffer to Tate Field.
