BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Senior Meagan Thornton and junior Erica Allen scored a goal and notched an assist each while the Lees-McRae women's soccer team thwarted Limestone, 2-1, in Conference Carolinas play Wednesday evening at Tate Field in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bobcats (4-5-1, 3-1-1 CC) dominated the first 45 minutes while holding a 19-5 advantage in shots. The Saints (5-2-2, 3-1-1 CC) dropped their first conference match while goalie Alexis Dunbar recorded five saves.
Thornton (Millville, N.J.) blasted a shot past Dunbar at the 7:40 mark after receiving two one-touch passes from Allen (Norton, Ohio) and Sarah Mahar (Jacksonville, Fla.)
Mahar led both squads with 10 shots on the evening.
The Saints provided the equalizer when Ashton Bowles found the back of the net when a corner kick landed at her feet and she connected from point blank range in the 25th minute.
Less than 12 minutes later, Thornton found Allen in front of the net after both won a sprint down the field. Allen one-timed Thornton's pass to the lower right at the 37:36 mark to take the lead for good.
LMC's defense was hardnosed in the final stanza while allowing only four shots, but none were on frame.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday for a crucial showdown with CC-leading Converse at 3 p.m. at Tate Field.
