TIGERVILLE, S.C. --- Senior Meagan Thornton powered the offense with a goal and an assist while the Lees-McRae women's soccer team struck for two late goals in an eight-minute span to claim a 2-1 victory against North Greenville in Conference Carolinas action Wednesday afternoon at Younts Stadium in Tigerville, S.C.
The Bobcats (5-8-1, 4-3-1 CC) dominated the match holding an 18-4 shot advantage, including 11 on frame while senior Kaitlyn Briggs (Oviedo, Fla.) broke the school record for wins in a career by notching her 34th. The Crusaders (1-12-1, 1-7-1) saw goalie Madelynn Schober amass nine saves.
Six different Bobcats took a shot in first 25 minutes of the game, with four of them being stonewalled by Schober.
Sophomore Lena Langille (Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia) nearly cracked the scoreboard with 30 seconds remaining in the opening period.
NGU broke a scoreless tie when Erin McLure connected with Lindsay Tuten at the 72:39 mark.
Coach Nick Whiting's squad recovered quickly by notching the equalizer 3:11 later when sophomore Erin Barcal (Wilmington, N.C.) found the back of the net while Thornton (Millville, N.J.) earned the assist.
Thornton registered the match-winner at the 83:06 mark and currently leads LMC with five goals on the season.
The Bobcats travel to Wilson, N.C. Saturday at 1 p.m. to face Barton. LMC and Barton are tied for sixth in the conference standings.
