Overholt's OT Golden Goal Propels Women's Soccer to Upset of No. 2 Limestone, 1-0

GAFFNEY, S.C. --- Junior Mallory Overholt connected on a 30-yard golden goal strike in the 97th minute to propel No. 7 Lees-McRae to a 1-0 overtime upset win at No. 2 Limestone in a Conference Carolinas Quarterfinal Tuesday evening at Saints Field in Gaffney, S.C.

The Bobcats (7-10-1) cranked out 37 shots, marking the third time this season that coach Nick Whiting's squad has eclipsed the 30-shot mark. The Saints (10-4-3) went 0-2 against LMC this season while Gabriella Reid led the team with two shots.

Overholt (Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada) took two steps after a pass from senior Meagan Thornton (Millville, N.J.) before unleashing a 30-yard bullet over LC's Mariette Martinez with three minutes remaining in the first overtime.

Despite hitting the crossbar on multiple occasions throughout the first 90 minutes, LMC was unable to find the back of the net.

Martinez stayed busy while accumulating 17 saves.

A trio of Bobcats amassed at least seven shots, while junior Sarah Mahar (Jacksonville, Fla.) had 11 of them.

Thornton and sophomore Erin Barcal (Wilmington, N.C.) had seven each.

Senior Kaitlyn Briggs (Oviedo, Fla.) extended her school record in wins (35) and shutouts (23) by stonewalling four Saint shots.

The Bobcats will travel to Spartanburg, S.C., on the campus of Converse, to battle No. 3 Pfeiffer in a semifinal battle Friday at 8 p.m.
