GAFFNEY, S.C. – Three members of the Lees-McRae College women's soccer team earned All-Conference Carolinas honors at the league's award banquet this afternoon in Gaffney, S.C. Goalkeeper Alexis Feely was named the Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the league's first team. Forwards Kiara Montenegro and Riley Neese were also recognized with third team honors at the banquet as well.
Feely, a junior from Raleigh, N.C., has been an integral part of Lees-McRae's success this season. She led Conference Carolinas with 133 saves, posted the fourth-best save percentage (.842) and ranked seventh with a 1.37 goals-against average. Feely also made 10 or more saves in eight contests to go along with three shutouts this season. Feely is the second Bobcat ever to win the Conference Carolinas Defensive Player of the Year award with the first being Mary Dorn in 2012.
Montenegro finished second on the team with five goals behind only fellow third team honoree, Neese. Montenegro's five goals, which led the freshman class at LMC, came at critical times for the Bobcats as three turned into game-winning goals. Montenegro tallied game-winners against Belmont Abbey, Converse and North Greenville this season.
Neese led all Bobcat scorers with six goals this season. The sophomore from Greensboro, N.C. also led the team in points (13), shots (33) and shots on goal (20). One of Neese's six goals came in Monday's quarterfinal win at Belmont Abbey and she also notched a goal in the shootout to help the Bobcats come out on top.
Feely, Montenegro and Neese along with the rest of the Bobcats will be back in action later today when they take on Chowan in the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas tournament. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Gaffney.
