HICKORY, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's soccer team fell in its season-opener Thursday night at Lenoir-Rhyne by a score of 6-1.
After the Bears got the scoreboard first in the 14th minute, the Bobcats evened the score in the 30th with the first career goal by Lianna Smith. Following the goal by the Bobcats, Lenoir-Rhyne continued to pressure the Bobcat defense for the rest of the contest resulting in five unanswered goals to finish off the victory. In addition to Smith's shot, Kiara Montenegro and Ashley Herndon also landed shots on goal in the contest for Lees-McRae.
Hope Sanborn, who made her fourth career start in goal, took the loss after allowing three goals in 45 minutes of action. Sanborn did make 11 saves during her time in net. Freshman Makayla Willets also saw time in goal and made a pair of saves in her collegiate debut.
The Bobcats will return to action on Sunday when they visit Francis Marion for a non-conference clash. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday but was pushed back due to effects from Hurricane Dorian. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
