Swimming turns in strong first day at the Conference Carolinas Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College swimming teams turned in several stellar performances on day one of the Conference Carolinas Swimming Championships Thursday in Charlotte. Highlighting the day was Molly Layde breaking the conference record in the 1000 yard freestyle event.

Layde's record-breaking swim earned 20 points for Lees-McRae. Layde's time of 10:36.08 broke the time by Limestone's Tara Stevens swim last year that clocked in at 10:40.06. Additionally, Layde becomes the first female conference champion in the history of Lees-McRae swimming.

Christian Nishimura earned Lees-McRae's other All-Conference Carolinas nod of the day. Nishimura earned Second Team honors with a time of 1:50.97 in the 200 yard individual medley.

In addition to Layde's and Nishimura's performances, all the other Bobcats that swam on Thursday put forth season-best swims. To go along with the individual outings, members of the relay teams trimmed significant times as well.

At the end of day one, both the men's and women's teams sit eighth in their respective standings. The women's team has 73 points, while the men's team has earned 78.5 points.
