SUMTER, SC--The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats tennis team participated in the Conference Carolinas fall tournament last weekend with Ashley Mayers (Miami, FL) leading the way in singles action and teaming with Christine Vanard in doubles play.
Mayers, in her second season with the Bobcats, faced Nikki Garrison of St. Andrews Friday afternoon, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 win in the round of 32. In the round of 16 Mayers took on Mount Olive's Monica Barone, escaping with 6-3, 6-0 win to move on to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Mayers took on number one seed Jennifer Gennaoui of Erskine who had beaten Vanard 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 in the round of 16. Gennaoui proved too much for Mayers, taking out a Lees-McRae player in consecutive matches to move on to the semi-finals by beating Mayers 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles play, Mayers and Vanard teamed up to defeat Garrison and Morgan Worthington of St. Andrews 8-0 before falling to Rachel Lemar and Jill Smith of Coker 8-2. With the loss, the Lady Bobcats duo moved over to the consolation draw. Ive Jardin and Rachel Wilkes of Converse provided the opposition in the consolation draw, with the Lady Bobcats tandem moving on to the semifinal round with an 8-3 win. In the semifinals, Mayers and Vanard slipped by Barone and Carol Aro of Mount Olive 8-4 before losing to Alexandra Gade and Jesse Griffin of Limestone in the finals 8-5.
