Lees-McRae's Vanard Named Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Thomasville, N.C.--Lees-McRae College's Christine Vanard (6-7 overall, 3-2 conf.) has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas women's tennis Player of the Week during week number six in the 2008 season. Freshman Christine Vanard went 2-1 in both singles and doubles action in three away contests this week.

Vanard, 10-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play, has won nine of her last ten matches including a win over NCAA Div I Appalachian State's Monica Tomas. Against regional foe Lander University, Vanard was involved in both points won as the Lady Bobcats fell 7-2 on Monday. She had a commanding 6-1, 6-3 victory over Fernanda Oliviera, then teamed up with sophomore Cameron Joyce to defeat Vahatalo/Fell 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.

On Tuesday Vanard was handed her first loss in nine matches at the No. 1 slot when Erskine's Jennifer Gennaoui defeated her 6-2, 6-1, then went on to also drop the doubles contest with partner Joyce 8-4 to the Fleet duo of Jenna Tudor and Britton Bignon.

Traveling to Tusculum College on Friday, Vanard rebounded from the loss to #33 Erskine to shut out Jenn Sparks 6-0, 6-0 and claim the 8-4 doubles victory.
