HIGH POINT, N.C. - Lees-McRae College freshman Nursharneem Shamsuddin was named the Conference Carolinas women's tennis Player of the Week for Mar. 11-17, announced today (Wednesday, Mar. 20).
Shamsuddin posted a 9-3 week individually helping Lees-McRae to a 4-2 week over Spring Break in Orlando, Fla. This is her first career Player of the Week selection.
Lees-McRae opened Spring Break tournament play with a 7-0 win over the University of Scranton back on Mar. 11, in which Shamsuddin teamed up with Sandy Allen for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles before winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles in the match. Later that day in Lees-McRae's 7-0 loss to Division I Navy, Shamsuddin forced a tie-breaker in her singles loss. Shamsuddin helped Lees-McRae to a pair of 4-3 wins on Mar. 12, defeating Southwestern College (Kan.) and Mount Holyoke. She and Allen teamed up for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, before she posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles against Southwestern. Against Mount Holyoke, Shamsuddin and Allen won 7-6 (8-7 tie-breaker) at No. 1 doubles, before Shamsuddin would grind out a 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) victory at No. 2 singles. Shamsuddin went on to post Lees-McRae's lone win in a 4-1 loss to Division I Saint Joseph's on Mar. 13, posting a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles. In the team's final match of the tournament against Wheaton College (Ill.), Shamsuddin helped the Bobcats to another 4-3 win. She and Allen posted an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, before Shamsuddin's 1-6, 6-0, 10-6 win at No. 1 singles clinched the match.
The week brings her combined doubles record to 8-5, while she is also 6-5 in singles play.
The freshman is a native of Sabah, Malaysia.
