BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Junior Mekayla Boswell won the high jump while Kaitlyn Gearing, Kendall Isler and Joshua Godwin turned in top-five performances at day one of the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at Arthur-Lauritsen-Sanders Track and Field Venue in Banner Elk, N.C.
Boswell (Mocksville, N.C.) claimed her second consecutive outdoor high jump title after clearing 1.57 meters.
Gearing (Sautee, Ga.) had an outstanding day after finishing second in the high jump with a mark of 1.52 meters and claimed four in the javelin with a heave of 34.35 meters.
Isler (Winder, Ga.) tied for third in the high jump with a height of 1.86 meters.
Godwin (Pleasant Grove, N.C.) finished fifth in the men’s javelin with a throw of 44.84 meters. LMC’s Benjamin Wilson (Salisbury, N.C.) wasn’t far behind and grabbed sixth with a distance of 44.81.
Junior Cody McNeely scorched the competition and turned in the best prelim time in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.02. He will compete for gold at 2:20 p.m. Saturday.
Sophomore Tyree Reed (Phenix City, Ala.) impressed and qualified for the 100- and 200-meter dash finals. Reed clocked a 10.62 second time in the 100 while using a 21.56 to complete the 200.
Sophomore Makayla Estep (Moravian Falls, N.C.) qualified for the finals in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles. She needed 16.28 seconds to earn a spot in the top-eight of the 100 while needing 1:11.44 for the 400.
Junior Erin Bingham (West Jefferson, N.C.) notched the best prelim time in the 100-meter hurdles, needing only 14.21 seconds. The junior qualified for the 200-meter dash finals with a time of 25.73.
Junior Kayla Powell (Moyock, N.C.) finished sixth in the hammer throw with a throw of 33.97 meters.
LMC’s Najah Underwood (Hendersonville, N.C.) placed eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 9.92 meters.
Sophomore Alexandria Flint (Blue Bell, Pa.) qualified for the 800-meter run finals after turning in a time of 2:28.59.
Senior Davante Scott (Hopkins, S.C.) turned in a time of 49.67 in the 400-meter dash prelims and will compete in the finals at 1:50 p.m. Saturday.
Sophomore Jamie Colon (Acworth, Ga.) finished 10th in the 10,000-meter run after notching a time of 44:45.57.
The women’s team currently sits third with 27 points while Mount Olive (56.5) and Limestone (51.5) are first and second, respectively.
The men’s squad is fifth with 12.5 points while UMO (66) and LC (59) hold the top two spots.
Action begins Saturday, April 30 at 11:30 a.m. with the men’s shot put, men’s pole vault and women’s long jump. The 3,000-meter steeplechase commences the running events at 12 p.m.
