HIGH POINT, N.C. – Mekayla Boswell (Mocksville, N.C.) of the Lees-McRae College women's track & field program was named the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year by the conference Thursday afternoon. This prestigious award is presented annually to a student-athlete in each sport for recognition of their outstanding performance on the field and in the classroom.
Boswell was one of six Bobcats to be named to the All-Southeast Region teams the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). In addition to her All-Region nod, Boswell was also named the Conference Carolinas Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 7. At the conference championships last month, Boswell won the high jump event with a leap of 1.65m, which was also a new career-high for her. Academically, Boswell boasts a 3.63 GPA during her time at Lees-McRae and was named Academic All-Conference team following the indoor season.
Candidates are submitted by each member institution from each of the conference's twenty sponsored sports. To be considered for the honor, the student-athlete must have attended their member institution for at least one year and have reached junior or senior standing with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher on the four-point scale. Scholar Athletes of the Year must also be represented on their sport's first, second, or third all-conference team, the rosters of which are chosen by coaches at the end of each playing season.
