Gearing shatters program’s heptathlon record at Catamount Classic

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College track and field programs wrapped up the two-day Catamount Classic Saturday in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Overall, the men's team placed eighth among 17th schools, while the women's team was 16th out of 20 schools. Individually, the Bobcats were led by senior Kaitlyn Gearing, who shattered the program's record in heptathlon by nearly 1,000 points with a point total of 4,232.

In addition to Gearing's performance, the Bobcats also had four other athletes finish in the top five in their respective events. The duo of Nolan Capps and Austin Thompson both finished third in the 3000m steeplechase and the 5000m run, respectively In the field events, Jason Saintizaire finished second in the high jump and Cooper Abernathy was fourth in the javelin throw with a toss of 48.38m

The men's team will not be back in action until the Conference Carolinas Outdoor Championships on April 27-28. The women's team, however, will have one more meet to prep itself before the conference meet with the Duke Invitational next weekend.
