Track and Field begins 2019 at ETSU Invitational this weeekend

BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College men's and women's indoor track and field teams will compete for the first time in 2019 at the East Tennessee State University Invitational this weekend (Jan. 11-12). Live stats will be available at www.lmcbobcats.com.

About the Event - Competition begins on Friday (Jan. 11) at 8:30 a.m. with the women's weight throw, followed by both the men's and women's 60-meter hurdles. Saturday's (Jan. 12) first event will be the women's 3,000-meter run at 8:35 a.m.

Last Time Out - The Lees-McRae track and field teams opened the indoor season back on Nov. 30-Dec. 1 at the Appalachian State Open.

Men: Cooper Abernathy was Lees-McRae's top finisher in the weight throw, taking 14th with a mark of 12.69 meters.  In the triple jump, Jalen Martin finished ninth with a distance of 12.70 meters. Abernathy led the way in the shot put with a ninth-place finish (12.69 meters), while Blake Radder placed 18th with a distance of 10.79 meters. Martin notched the second top-10 finish of the event for Lees-McRae in the long jump, finishing eighth with a distance of 6.56 meters. Logan Welton and Logan Styers finished 16th (5.59 meters) and 17th (4.82 meters) respectively in the event. Luke Rochester tied for third place in the pole vault with a height of 4.00 meters. Dylan Williams was the top finisher in the 55-meter dash in 24th (7.11 seconds), while Styers finished in 26th (7.32 seconds) and Alexander Tricot took 27th (7.60 seconds). Martin led the way in the 300-meter dash with a sixth-place finish (36.66 seconds), while Dalton Tallent finished eighth (37.12 seconds).  Williams also crossed the line in 17th in 40.30 seconds. Corimonte Eatmon made his Lees-McRae debut in the 400-meter dash with a ninth-place finish in 53.57 seconds.

Women: Mya Roberts was the top finisher for Lees-McRae's women in the weight throw in 18th at 12.23 meters, while Bayle Wood finished 20th at 11.78 meters. Sariah Dempaire-Salomon made her Lees-McRae debut in a big way, finishing in eighth place in the shot put but also breaking the Lees-McRae College indoor shot put record with a mark of 11.63 meters.  The previous record of 11.36 meters belonged to Rachelle Cleveland who set the mark at this same event back in 2012. Roberts finished 18th in the shot put with a distance of 10.40 meters, while Wood finished in 27th with a distance of 9.30 meters. Jessica Reeves would finish 11th in the high jump with a height of 1.45 meters. Millie McCoy was the top Bobcat finisher in the long jump tied for 14th at 4.91 meters, while Mikali Smith (21st, 4.37 meters) and Reeves (22nd, 3.94 meters) also competed in the long jump. Brittney Augistin earned a ninth-place finish in the 55-meter dash in 7.53 seconds, while Megan Guess finished 24th in 8.33 seconds. Augustin would notch her second top-10 finish of the event in the 300-meter dash, finishing eighth in 42.88 seconds. The quartet of Augustin, McCoy, Reeves and Smith ran the 4x300 relay in 3:19.30.

Up Next - The teams are back in action on Jan. 19 when they travel to Winston-Salem,N.C. for the Wake Forest University Invitational.
