BANNER ELK, NC--In the last regular season game of the the season the Lady Bobcats defeated conference opponent St. Andrews Presbyterian College in four games to clinch their second consecutive regular season conference championship and their first in the newly renamed Conference Carolinas. The win launched Lees-McRae over second place Limestone with a 17-3 record (23-11 overall) while St. Andrews finished 10-10 in conference play and 11-24 overall.
In their second conference match of the weekend, the Lady Bobcats once again came out to play. After taking an early lead, Lees-McRae kept control of the game, winning game one 30-22.
The Knights, not wanting to bow to defeat, rallied in the second game and pulled out a 26-30 win over the nine-time defending conference champions.
In the third game the two teams vied for the lead, both keeping within striking distance of the other. With strong play from senior Daviana Metti (Cordoba, Argentina), who finished the day with 16 kills and 21 digs, and junior Natalie Burns (Orlando, FL) who added nine kills and six block assists, the Lady Bobcats eventually gained an edge and took the third game 30-28.
Lees-McRae started game four with one goal in mind....defeating St. Andrews now and clinching the regular season title. The Lady Bobcats took control of the game from the moment they stepped on the floor, eager for the win, defeating the Knights 30-24.
Other leaders for the Bobcats included senior Caty Honey (Geneva, IL) with seven kills, freshman Whitney Kiser(Connelly Springs, NC) putting up two block solos and two block assists, and freshman Kell Bogdan (Leawood, KS) adding 22 digs for the Lady Bobcats. Sophomore Lauren Dickover (Las Vegas, NV) not only had 41 digs in the four game match, but also added six aces and nine digs.
With the win the Lady Bobcats claim the Regular Season Conference Carolinas Championship title and receive a bye in the first round of tournament action. Lees-McRae will host the winner of the Belmont Abbey (#8)/Converse (#9) game on Wednesday, November 11 at 6:30pm.
