ANDERSON, SC--A young Lees-McRae defeated Limestone to capture its 10th straight Conference Carolinas Tournament championship Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. With the win Lees-McRae receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament and will play next week at a location and date yet to be determined.
The Lady Bobcats, 26-11 overall, seemed to have control of the match after they won the first two games, but the Lady Saints battled back to force a fifth game.
"After the first two games I didn't believe Limestone would push us as hard as they pushed, but they did and deserve a tremendous amount of credit for their performance," said Lees-McRae head coach Jamie Petrik.
But Lees-McRae took control of fifth game with two three-point runs. With the game tied at 5, the Bobcats scored three straight points. They also used another three-point run to close out the match.
"With six freshman and four out of five new passers we showed tremendous confidence in tight situations," said Petrik.
The tournament MVP, Daviana Metti (Cordoba, Argentina) recorded 27 kills and 18 digs to lead the Bobcats' attack. Senior Caty Honey (Geneva, IL)added 19 kills and Kell Bogdan (Leawood, KS) had 23 digs for Lees-McRae. Lees-McRae setter Lauren Dickover (Las Vegas, NV) dished out 64 assists and had 22 digs.
