BANNER ELK, N.C. - Whitney Justice had 10 kills to lead the Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-21) win over the Anderson University Lady Trojans Friday night in Williams Gymnasium in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball action.
In the first set, Lees-McRae trailed 13-15, but a Justice kill,
a solo block by Taylor Clendenin and an Anderson attack error pull
the Lady Bobcats within one, 15-14. Anderson responded with a kill
from Adria Mullaney to extend the lead to 16-14, but Lees-McRae
went on a six-point run by tough serving from Megan Mitchell to
take a 20-16 lead. Anderson managed to tie the match a 21, but a
kill by Lauren Hall put Lees-McRae ahead for good in the set to
earn the 25-22 win.
Set two saw Anderson jump out to a 10-5 lead, before the Bobcats
rallied to tie the set at 13 on a kill from Justice. After four
ties at 14, 15, 17 and 18, Lees-McRae's Hall earned a kill on an AU
blocking error to make it 19-18, and the Lady Bobcats didn't look
back as they went on the win the set 25-23.
Again, set three started with AU taking an early lead, 10-7, before
Lees-McRae could rally and tie the set at 13 when Katie-Marie Legg
earned a kill on AU's fifth and final blocking error of the match.
Lees-McRae would stay just out of reach to earn the 25-21 set three
win to claim the match.
With the win, Lees-McRae improves to 11-4 overall and 6-1 in the
conference, while Anderson falls to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in the
conference.
Justice's 10 kills came on 16 attempts with three errors for a .438
hitting percentage. Clendenin and Legg had eight kills. Mitchell
had 34 assists, and Luana Rocha had a match-high 11 digs. Mitchell
had three service aces, and Legg had a match-high four blocks, one
assists and three solo. As a team Lees-McRae had ten service aces
and six total blocks.
Anderson was led by Jamie Lancaster, who had a match-high 12 kills
on 25 attempts with only three errors for a .360 hitting
percentage. Lancaster was the only Lady Trojan with double-digit
kills. She also led the team with ten digs. Lindsay Doggett
passed out 32 assists and collected nine digs. Puallette Rivers
led the Lady Trojans with three total blocks, one solo and two
assists.
Lees-McRae will return to action Saturday at noon against
Erksine.
