Wingate holds off Bobcats, 3-1

WINGATE, N.C. --- The Wingate University women's volleyball team recorded 15 blocks, and held Lees-McRae College to 33 kills en route to a 3-1 victory in NCAA Division II Southeast Region play on Tuesday evening.

Wingate (19-2) won the match by scores of 25-15, 25-13, 22-25, and 25-16, posting a .193 hitting percentage while holding Lees-McRae (10-14) to a .000 clip on the attack. The Bobcats tallied 67 digs and seven digs in the match, as Wingate notched 54 smashes, 15 blocks, and dug out 77 attacks.

Taylor Clendenin (Statesville, N.C.) paced the Bobcats with eight kills and two blocks (two solo, two assists), while moving into a tie for fourth on the program's all-time list with her 116th career service ace. Haydn Beatty (Norman, Okla.) and Rachel Grether (Ocala, Fla.) each tallied seven kills, as Sariah Suryadevara (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded 25 digs. Megan Mitchell (Minden, Nev.) added a double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs while posting two aces.

Shelly Stumpff led the way for Wingate with a match-high 13 kills, as Susie Murach added a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Lexi Potter chipped in 11 smashes and a .429 hitting percentage, while Anna Hilton recorded 15 digs and six blocks (one solo, five assists). Stephanie Tassone posted a match-high 27 digs as Grace Krauser equaled Hilton's match-high with six block assists.

Wingate jumped out to an early 12-6 advantage in the first set before the Bobcats countered, closing the gap to 14-11 on a solo block by Clendenin. The Bulldogs would answer, pushing the margin to 22-13 on a Potter kill before capping the set following a smash from Jenna Flanigin.

The Bulldogs carried the momentum into the second frame, opening the set on a 12-2 run before Lees-McRae answered with a 7-2 run to cut the margin to 14-9 following a Mitchell ace. Wingate would counter with an 11-4 surge, closing out the set and taking a 2-0 lead in the match following a Bobcat miscue.

Lees-McRae battled back in the third, taking an early 10-6 lead following a Beatty ace before Wingate countered with a 10-4 spurt to claim a two-point advantage on a Krauser kill. The Bobcats would answer with an 8-4 run, reclaiming the lead at 22-20 on a block by Jordan Banta (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Angela Morse (Clinton Township, Mich.) before Clendenin capped the set with a smash to trim the Wingate lead to 2-1.

The Bulldogs responded in the fourth, opening the set with a 10-5 run before pushing the lead to 18-10 following three straight kills from Murach, Hilton, and Iris Brewer. After the Bobcats battled back to trim the margin to 22-16 following a Beatty kill, Wingate countered with a 3-0 spurt to cap the set and the match at 25-16.

Lees-McRae returns to the court on Wednesday when the Bobcats host King College in Conference Carolinas play at 7 p.m. in Williams Gymnasium. The Bobcats will be collecting donations to the Meme Mckensie Brown Fight Like A Girl Scholarship Fund, the Brown family, or the American Cancer Society as part of the Meme Brown Memorial Match.
