BANNER ELK, N.C. --- A trio of Lees-McRae women's volleyball players notched at least 11 kills in an impressive sweep of Converse, 25-21, 25-19, 25-18, in Conference Carolinas action Friday evening in Williams Gymnasium.
The Bobcats (6-4, 2-0 CC) set the tone early by hitting .333 in the opening set while junior Jordan Banta (Virginia Beach, Va.) cranked out a match-high 15 kills on the evening. The Valkyries (5-6, 0-2) struggled offensively while hitting at a .065 clip on the evening.
Junior Jariliz Cotté recorded a double-double (12 kills, 12 digs) and claimed three block assists. She currently leads the team and sits fourth in the conference (128).
LMC led wire-to-wire in the opening set while sophomore Avalon Liscio (Naples, Fla.) contributed with four kills.
Cotté connected on consecutive kills to give the Bobcats their largest lead of the set, 22-16, but CC rallied with a 3-0 run, forcing an LMC timeout.
Banta got in the mix with a block assist and kill to stonewall the Valkyries comeback effort.
Freshman Siarra Walker (Winston-Salem, N.C.) smashed a kill to spark a 7-2 run to open the middle frame.
The Bobcats stayed on the pedal while pushing their lead to 18-8 after a Cotté kill.
Converse shaved the deficit to five, 24-19, following a pair of Journee English kills, but Liscio blasted one of her 11 kills on the night to give the home squad the second set.
The final set was tight early, but coach Dave Schmidlin's team took the momentum when Liscio and Haylee Leonard (Winston-Salem, N.C.) an English shot to take a 9-8 lead.
Junior Allyson Schillinger (Spring Hill, Fla.) delivered an ace to propel LMC to a 6-0 run, 19-11.
The Valkyries' Katie Butler recorded one of her team-high 11 kills to trim the lead to 21-17.
Liscio cranked out her last kill of the evening to seal the sweep.
Schillinger paced both squads with 39 assists while notching eight digs.
LMC returns to action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when it welcomes Limestone for a Conference Carolinas bout.
