LMC Women's Volleyball Splits at Spike Out Hunger Challenge

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Senior Haylee Leonard amassed 21 kills while junior Madison Martin turned in 29 digs and four aces while the Lees-McRae women's volleyball team defeated Chowan, 3-2, before falling to Slippery Rock, 3-0, Friday at Whittaker Gym in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The Bobcats (1-0) won all of their sets by two points each and hit a match-best .333 in the final set. The Hawks (0-1) hit .280 or better in three of the five sets.

Leonard (Wallburg, N.C.) paced the Bobcats with 15 kills and Rachel Cutshaw (Whitesburg, Tenn.) contributed 11.

Junior Courtney Weathersbee (Raleigh, N.C.) produced a double-double with 29 assists and 11 digs. Martin (Goldsboro, N.C.) led all players with 21 digs.

Coach William Tatge's club won the first two sets, 27-25, 26-24, before dropping the next two, 25-19, 26-24.

LMC claimed an entertaining fifth set, 15-13.

CU's Morgan Spencer impressed with 15 kills, five aces and six digs.

Slippery Rock 3, Lees-McRae 0
The Rock (2-0) had four players with four kills or more while Haley Defibaugh dished out 14 assists. The Bobcats (1-1) saw Madigan Gonzales (Ruidoso, N.M.) lead the team with eight kills.

All three sets were tightly contest, but SRU was able to grab leads and hold on late. The Rock won the first set, 25-19, before taking the second, 25-21. They would win the closest set of the contest, 25-22.

Weathersbee distributed 14 assists while Martin and Whitley Starnes (Kingsport, Tenn.) had eight digs each.

LMC battles Kutztown at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sep. 3 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
