Women's Volleyball Fall Twice to Conclude Play in Miami

MIAMI, Fla. --- The Lees-McRae women's volleyball team dropped two contests after battling Valdosta St. and host Barry University, Saturday at the Health and Sports Center in Miami, Fla.

The Blazers (2-4) rode the talent of Susanna Peonia, who accumulated 19 kills, eight digs and a pair of block assists. The Bobcats (1-5) were led by Madigan Gonzales (Ruidoso, N.M.), who had 10 kills.

Senior Haylee Leonard (Wallburg, N.C.) added seven kills while Courtney Weathersbee (Raleigh, N.C.) dished out 27 assists.

VSU won the contest in straight sets, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20.

LMC freshman Lexi Zangari (Breckenridge, Colo.) tied the first set at 21 with one of her six kills. However, the Blazers rattled off a 4-0 run to close out the set.

Leonard sparked a 4-0 Bobcat run in the second set while taking a 17-15 lead.

VSU used four kills from Peonia to knot it at 22 before using one more to conclude second-set action.

The Blazers led wire-to-wire in the final set.

Junior Madison Martin (Goldsboro, N.C.) had nine digs.

The Bucs (6-1) swung better than .280 in three of the four sets while Jaeda Allen paced the team with 13 kills. The Bobcats (1-6) saw all but one player record a dig.

Zangari led LMC with nine kills while Weathersbee handed out 28 assists.

Barry claimed the first set, 25-15, while dishing out three aces.

LMC hustled out to an 8-2 advantage in the second and controlled the set while leading by as many as nine, 23-14.

The Bucs made a run and cut the deficit to three, 23-20, before committing consecutive attack errors.

Barry grabbed the third set despite LMC swinging at a team-best .444 clip.

The Bobcats produced a furious run in the fourth, trailing 23-15, coach William Tatge's squad cut it to one, 23-22, behind kills from Leonard and Gonzales.

Barry won the set with kills from Kishara Gordon and Kristina Filimonova.

The Bobcats trek to Wise, Va. Tuesday, Sep. 13 at 7 p.m. to battle UVa.-Wise.
