BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Freshman Lexi Zangari led all players with 11 kills while the Lees-McRae women's volleyball team swept Limestone, 25-23, 25-21, 26-24, in Conference Carolinas action Saturday afternoon at Williams Gymnasium in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Bobcats (4-6, 2-0 CC) picked up their third win of the week and defeated LC for the first time in nearly four years (Sep. 18, 2012). The Saints (5-7, 1-2) swung at a .079 clip on the day while a pair of players turned in a dozen digs each.
Zangari (Breckenridge, Colo.) turned in four of her kills in the opening set while LMC held a 16-14 advantage.
LC responded with a 7-3 run, capped off by a pair of Taylor Berg aces, to take a 21-17 lead.
Coach William Tatge's club used an ace from senior Haylee Leonard (Wallburg, N.C.) and Darian Parsons (Jenks, Okla.) and took advantage of four LC attack errors to come back and win the set following an 8-2 run.
The Bobcats hustled out to a 15-8 lead in the second, capped off by an Ellissa Small (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) kill.
Small amassed six kills and a solo block in the contest.
The Saints rallied back to cut the deficit to two multiple times, but strong play from Zangari and Rachel Cutshaw (Whitesburg, Tenn.) muffed the comeback effort.
The third set proved to be the most entertaining with nine ties and five lead changes.
The Bobcats used a 6-0 run to erase a four-point deficit to take a 17-15 lead.
LC eventually retook the lead and forced set point, but kills from Leonard and Cutshaw packaged with a block from Avalon Liscio (Naples, Fla.), Cutshaw and Madigan Gonzales (Ruidoso, N.M.) sparked a 3-0 run that concluded play.
Junior Madison Martin (Goldsboro, N.C.) led all palyers with 14 digs while Parson paced the team with 18 assists.
The Bobcats welcome Belmont Abbey Wednesday, Sep. 21 at 7 p.m. for a CC tilt in Williams Gymnasium.
