Martin breaks all-time dig record but Bobcats fall in four to Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. – Lees-McRae College women's volleyball player Madison Martin made some program history Saturday afternoon at Lenoir-Rhyne as her 13 digs set the program's new all-time record for digs in a career with 1,242. Despite Martin's her teammates' best efforts, Lees-McRae dropped a four-set decision to LRU (25-16, 22-25, 25-11, 25-19) dropping its record to 0-4 on the season.

Set 1: Lenoir-Rhyne scored the first three points to start the first set and it never looked back as it went on to defeat the Bobcats, 25-16, in the opening frame. The Bears held Lees-McRae to a -.098 hitting percentage in the first on 41 attempts. Sophomore Logan Slusher provided the bulk of the kills for LMC with three kills in the frame.

Set 2: The Bobcats seemed to turn things around in the second as it built up a five-point lead over the Bears at 10-5. However, the Bears went on a 7-0 run to pull in front of the Bobcats. Both teams traded turns with the lead for duration of the second until the Bobcats scored three straight points after the score was deadlocked at 22 to pull off its first set victory of the afternoon.

Set 3: LRU saved its best play for the third as it hit .467 with 16 kills on 30 attempts on its way to a 25-11 victory over the Bobcats to pull back in front. The Bears jumped on the Bobcats very early on in the third as they scored 14 of the first 16 points in the frame.

Set 4: Much like it did in the third set, Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to an early lead and Lees-McRae couldn't recover. In the fourth, LRU scored six of the first seven points and never trailed after that as it went on to win the fourth frame, 25-19, to finish off the match. Caitlyn Smirne posted four of her team-leading eight kills in the fourth to go along with a pair of aces in three digs to pace LMC in the frame.

Next Up: The Bobcats are scheduled to host Fayetteville State Tuesday evening at Williams Gymnasium in its home opener at 6 p.m. However, the match is in jeopardy due to the impending impact of Hurricane Irma.
