BANNER ELK, N.C. – After dropping its first seven matches of the 2017 season, the Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team picked up its first victory this fall with a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-19, 25-14) over University of Virginia at Wise Wednesday evening at Williams Gymnasium. The win improves LMC's record to 1-7.
Set 1: Lees-McRae started strongly against UVa-Wise as it scored six of the first seven points in the first set. The Cavaliers rallied to pull in front of LMC though as they took a three-point lead at 15-12. After a Bobcat timeout, Lees-McRae refocused and went on a 7-0 run to stay in front for good as it went on to take the first frame, 25-19.
Set 2: In the second set, the Bobcats were able to follow up their 25-19 win with another victory by the identical score. LMC was led by the trio of Logan Slusher, Kaci Thornton and Elissa Small. The three players combined for 11 kills on 21 attempts in the second.
Set 3: The Bobcats saved their best offensive performance for last Wednesday as it hit a match-high .265 on 34 attempts with 14 kills. Thornton paced LMC's attack with four of those kills by herself and added four digs. Additionally, Lees-McRae never trailed in what proved to be the final set as it went on to finish off the sweep of the Cavaliers, 25-14.
Stat Standouts: Thornton paced the Bobcats both offensively and defensively in the victory as the Lubbock, Texas native posted nine kills to go along with 14 digs. Slusher also had a solid performance with a .429 hitting percentage with seven kills in 14 attempts. Setting up both Thornton and Slusher was senior Courtney Weathersbee who dished out 30 assists in the contest.
Next Up: The Bobcats will look to get a winning streak started when they return to action Friday night at Shaw University. The Bobcats and Bears are scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m. from Raleigh, North Carolina.
