WISE, Va. – The University of Virginia at Wise rallied after dropping the first set to the Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team to down the Bobcats in four sets Tuesday evening in non-conference action (18-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-10). The loss moves LMC's record to 3-14 on the season.
Set 1: Lees-McRae used a balanced attack to jump on the Cavaliers early and often to begin Tuesday's match. Rachel Cutshaw, Caitlin Smirne and Kaci Thornton each had three kills to lead the Bobcat attack. Backed by the play of this trio and the rest of the Bobcats, Lees-McRae opened an 11-3 lead in the first before wrapping up the frame with a 25-18 set victory.
Set 2: Neither team was able to gain much of an advantage in the second frame. Lees-McRae and UVa-Wise were tied at 20-20 before the Cavaliers scored five of the next seven points to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-22 win. Smirne paced LMC with four kills and a block, while Zangari chipped in three kills of her own in the frame.
Set 3: LMC struggled mightily offensively in third. The Bobcats committed a total of 15 attack errors in the frame leading the Cavaliers to 25-20 win in the frame. Lees-McRae did total a match-high 66 attacks in the stanza, but due to the number of errors UVa-Wise was able to come out on top.
Set 4: After rallying from being down one set, the Cavaliers finished off the comeback in convincing fashion with their best offensive frame of the match. As a team, UVa-Wise hit a match-high .278 with 15 kills compared to a -.051 mark from LMC to finish off the match, 25-10.
Next Up: The Bobcats will return to Williams Gymnasium Friday when they host Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas matchup. First serve for that match is set for 7 p.m.
