BANNER ELK, N.C. – After winning the first set 25-23, the Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team dropped three straight sets to Belmont Abbey College Friday evening (25-19, 27-25, 25-15) in Conference Carolinas action. The loss moves LMC to 3-15 overall and 1-8 in league contests in 2017.
Set 1: Lees-McRae used a balanced attack to upend the Crusaders to open Friday's contest. Elissa Small posted four of her team-high 13 kills in the contest in the opening stanza, while Caitlin Smirne and Logan Slusher chipped in three kills each to power the Bobcats to a 25-23 win over Belmont Abbey. Additionally, LMC hit a match-high .282 with 14 kills in the first.
Set 2: Despite totaling 22 digs in the second, Lees-McRae was unable to slow Belmont Abbey's attack as the Crusaders evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 win. Senior Madison Martin totaled of eight of those 22 digs in the second by herself. Martin finished the contest with a team-high 18 digs.
Set 3: The third set proved to be a tightly contested one as the score was tied at 11 different points in the stanza. After a Lexi Zangari kill, the Bobcats accounted for one of those ties making it 25-25. Unfortunately for Lees-McRae scored the next two points with a kill and an ace to edge LMC, 27-25.
Set 4: In what proved to be the final set of the contest, Belmont Abbey used its best defensive effort to finish of the match, 25-15. The Crusaders limited the Bobcats to only six kills on 37 attempts in fourth, while digging up 26 of those attempts. Four different Belmont Abbey players posted five or more digs in the frame.
Next Up: The Bobcats will return to action Saturday for a non-conference matchup against Bluefield State College. LMC swept the Big Blues earlier this season when the two teams matched up in Bluefield, W.V. First serve is set for noon from Williams Gymnasium.
