FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team dropped its final non-conference match of the season Tuesday night to Fayetteville State, 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 25-13, 25-23). The loss moves LMC's record to 6-17 on the 2017 campaign.
Set 1: Fayetteville State used a strong defensive effort to jump ahead of the Bobcats early in Tuesday's contest. The Broncos totaled seven blocks to go along with 17 digs to upend LMC, 25-18. In total, Lees-McRae committed 14 attack errors in the frame with 10 kills on 42 attempts for a -.095 hitting percentage.
Set 2: Lees-McRae would win its only frame of the contest in the second. The Bobcats received a boost off the bench from Hanna Steckler who totaled three kills on three attacks. Backed by the play of Steckler and the rest of the Bobcats, LMC was able to even the score at 1-1 with a 25-17 win in the second.
Set 3: After dropping the second set, Fayetteville State rebounded in the third. FSU hit a match-high .286 in the stanza to go on a couple sizeable runs. The Broncos went on a 6-0 run early in third followed by a 5-0 streak to close out the set to down LMC, 25-13. Elissa Small picked up five of LMC's 13 points in the frame with five kills.
Set 4: The Bobcats battled back to play much better in what proved to be the final set of the contest. LMC got out to a 4-1 lead early on and held the lead or was tied until FSU pulled ahead, 23-22. The Broncos then scored two of the next three points to close out the match, 25-23.
Stat Standouts: Small led all Bobcat attackers with 15 kills Tuesday. The 15 kills matched a career-high for the outside hitter from Myrtle Beach, S.C. Defensively, Lees-McRae was paced by Madison Martin who logged 23 digs. It is the eighth time this season that Martin has posted 20 or more digs in a match this season.
Next Up: The Bobcats will reenter Conference Carolinas Friday when they host league-leading Barton at Williams Gymnasium. First serve between the Bobcats and Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m.
