HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Virginia Union (27-25, 25-17, 25-18) and Coker (25-13, 25-19, 25-21) by identical 3-0 final scores Friday in Hartsville, S.C.
Virginia Union Recap – The story of the opening match of LMC's season was that Virginia Union made key defensive adjustments to hold the Bobcat attack in check. The Bobcats nearly upended the Panthers in the opening stanza, 27-25, thanks to a match-high 15 kills on 50 attacks. Unfortunately for Lees-McRae, the Panther defense clamped down to hold the Bobcats to hitting percentages of .026 and -.049 in the second and third set, respectively.
Individually, the Bobcats were led in their first match of day by Megan Gallion. Gallion, who was making her Bobcat debut in this contest, notched a double-double with 30 assists and a team-high 17 digs. Gallion's main target with these sets was sophomore Caitlyn Smirne. Smirne led LMC with 11 kills on 34 attacks to go along with eight digs. Rounding out the stat leaders for the Bobcats was Lexi Zangari, who set a new personal-best with 13 digs.
Coker Recap – In Friday's night cap, the Bobcats started slowly and started to play better towards the end of their match against Coker. The Cobras, however, was able to keep Lees-McRae from gaining sustainable momentum on their way to a 3-0 sweep over the Bobcats.
Junior Elissa Small led LMC's offense against Coker with eight kills and added six digs defensively. Freshman McKenzie Sprabary led the Bobcat defense picking up eight digs, while fellow newcomer Erica Slinde dished out a team-high 16 assists in the three-set tilt.
Next Up – LMC will close out its first weekend of regular season action Saturday when it takes on Winston-Salem State and Francis Marion tomorrow in Florence, S.C. The first serves for Saturday's matches are set for 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
