PEMBROKE, N.C. – After dropping its first match of the day to Lenoir-Rhyne in three sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-23), the Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team rebounded to sweep Fayetteville State (25-11, 25-22, 25-16) to pick up its first win of the season.
Lenoir-Rhyne Recap – Despite the score reading 3-0 at the end of LMC's first match of the day, the Bobcats were not far behind the Bears during the flow of the match. Lees-McRae held the lead in each of the three frames, including a 19-17 advantage in the second stanza. Additionally, the Bobcats erased an eight-point deficit in third to get within one point of their opposition at 24-23 but a kill derailed LMC's comeback attempt.
Individually, Caitlyn Smirne posted her first double-double of the 2018 season with 11 kills and totaled a career-high 17 digs in a losing effort. Setter Megan Gallion nearly posted a double-double of her own after dishing out 20 assists and picking up eight digs, while Lexi Zangari put together an efficient outing offensively totaling five kills on 10 attacks with one error for a .400 hitting percentage.
Fayetteville State Recap – Lees-McRae put together its most complete effort of the season in its second match of the day on its way to a 3-0 sweep over Fayetteville State. The Bobcats held the Broncos to a -.044 hitting percentage for the match to go along with 52 digs and a season-high six blocks in the victory. Offensively, the Bobcats had a pair of players reach double figures in kills and matched a season-high with seven aces as a team.
Junior Allie Cunningham spearheaded this solid defensive outing by the Bobcats with a career-high 18 digs. Smirne picked up another double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs on top of three aces. Rounding out the stat leaders in Friday's win for LMC was senior Kaci Thornton who hit .306 with 14 kills in the victory.
Next Up – The Bobcats will look to start a winning streak Saturday with two matches on tap. Lees-McRae's day of action will begin at 9 a.m. when it takes on Shaw followed by 3 p.m. tilt against Coker. There will be no video for tomorrow's matches, but live stat links can be found HERE.
