BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team will make a rare trip to the central time zone this weekend when they travel to Huntsville, Alabama for four matches to open its 2019 season. Lees-McRae will take on host school Alabama-Huntsville at noon Friday afternoon followed by a matchup against Trevecca Nazarene at 6 p.m. The Bobcats will wrap up their first weekend of action Saturday with matches against Harding at 10 a.m. and Montevallo at noon.
Long way from the mountains – The Bobcats will make their longest road trip in recent memory when they hit the road for Huntsville. It marks the longest road trip for the program since 2016 when the team went to Miami for four matches.
Preseason Prediction – In the annual Conference Carolinas Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Bobcats were picked to finish eighth in the league. Lees-McRae will look to improve upon the 7-23 mark it put together in 2018 with seven returners and eight newcomers with the team this fall.
Bobcats to Watch - Three of those seven returners were named players to watch for the team this season. Seniors Megan Gallion and Lex Zangari to go along with junior Caitlyn Smirne were the student-athletes recognized. Gallion posted the tenth-most assists in a single-season in program history in 2018, while Zangari and Smirne led the team in every other statistical category.
About the Opponents/Histories – Lees-McRae will face some stiff competition this weekend with three of the four teams coming off 20-plus win seasons in 2018. The only team that did not reach the 20-win plateau was Trevecca Nazarene that finished last season with seven victories. There isn't a ton of history between Lees-McRae and its four opponents. Just two all-time meetings in fact with a win over Montevallo back in 2011 and a loss to Trevecca Nazarene during the 2013 campaign.
