BANNER ELK, N.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team won on Friday at home against Converse in five sets (23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-13) in Banner Elk.
First Set – The Bobcats jumped out to the early lead in the first set before Converse found a way to tie the match at 15. From the midway point it was a back and forth affair until the Valkyries pulled away by three to make the score 23-20 in their favor. That proved to be enough as they won the first set, 25-23.
Second Set – The second set also would go the way of the Valkyries. Converse got out to a 18-11 lead that they would not let go of. The Bobcats battled back to close the gap, but found themselves down two sets heading into the third.
Third Set – The third set was the turning point as the Bobcats finally saw the ball bounce their way. Kaden Hill came up with a huge kill that was part of a five point run for Lees-McRae that allowed them to win their first point of the night.
Fourth Set- After winning the third, the Bobcats carried that momentum into a tightly contested fourth. Lees-McRae was down 10-15 until a seven point service run allowed the Bobcats to capture a lead they never gave away.
Fifth Set- The final frame would also come down to the wire. After being tied at 13, the Bobcats were able to win the final two points to complete their second 0-2 comeback of the year.
Stat Standouts – Lees-McRae were led by Caitlyn Smirne (19 kills) and Kaden Hill (15 kills). Megan Gallion turned in a monster performance (35 assists) while Megan Serowski (17 assists) also contributed to the Bobcat attack. Leading the team in digs was Caitlyn Smirne (23 digs) who racked up a double-double on the night.
Next Up – The Bobcats will return to action Saturday when they face Limestone at home. First serve is set for noon from Williams Gymnasium.
