CENTRAL, S.C. – The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep (25-9, 25-23, 25-20) against Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday evening. The victory, which is the team's third straight, improves Lees-McRae's record to 11-12 overall and 9-4 in conference action.
Set 1 – In their first road match in nearly a month, the Bobcats began Wednesday's contest with the Warriors with a stellar effort. Lees-McRae hit a match-high .467 with 15 kills on 30 attacks with just one error in the frame. With the Bobcat offense firing on all cylinders, SWU fell behind quickly and ultimately fell in the first, 25-9.
Set 2 – Southern Wesleyan looked like it had rebounded from a slow start to begin the second set. SWU scored four of the first five points of the frame. Lees-McRae came back to tie the score at nine. The two teams would trade points and turns with the lead. One of those ties occurred at 23. After that point, the Bobcats picked up back-to-back points to take the second set, 25-23.
Set 3 – The third frame was yet another competitive one with several tied points and lead changes. With the score tied at 18, Lees-McRae was able to put together a 7-2 run to close out the Warriors, 25-20. It marks the first time the Bobcats have won two matches against SWU in a season since they joined the league in 2014.
Stat Standouts – Offensively, the Bobcats were led by the duo of Caitlyn Smirne and Lex Zangari with 10 kills each. Freshmen Kaitlyn Arentz and Olivia Ney both had stellar performances defensively with Arentz racking up 17 digs in three sets and Ney picking up four solo blocks and a pair of block assists.
Next Up – Lees-McRae will be back in action on Friday evening when it visits Erskine in another conference match. First serve between the Bobcats and Flying Fleet is scheduled for 7 p.m.
