Monroe, NC--Freshman Dana Lindholm (Weaverville, NC) finished fourth overall in Saturday's NCAA DII Southeast Region Cross Country Championships thus qualifying her for the National Championships in Pensacola, FL Nov. 18th. Wingate University hosted the regional race where her top 5 finish earned Lindholm the first trip for a Bobcat since 2002.
After a cautious start she moved her way up and wound up just 11 seconds out of second place in the race. She covered the 6k course in a time of 23:49. Lindholm's performance earned her NCAA All-Southeast Region honors as well. She was also the first Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference runner in the race and the only representative from the CVAC to qualify for nationals on the women's side.
"I am proud of her development over the course of this season, she has really come on strong and this is a great attribute to her talents," said Coach Craig McPhail.
The Bobcats as a team finished 6th overall in the region, where 37 schools make up the Southeast Region.
Also having strong race performances were Gina Valenti (Washington, NC) as she finished 2nd on the Bobcats with a 33rd overall performance. Ashley May (Chilhowie, VA) finished 37th.
Casey Willis (Vale, NC) and Claire Weeks (Pine Level, NC) finished their Lees-McRae cross country careers this weekend with solid performances as well.
Lindholm's trip to the national meet will coincide with the NCAA DII Fall Festival where volleyball, men's and women's soccer, and field hockey will all crown their national champions in Pensacola in a week long sports festival.
