Bobcats' Season Off To a Good Start
BOONE, N.C. - The 2008 version of women's cross country at Lees-McRae College got their season underway Friday night in the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State University at the Greenway Trail in Boone, N.C. The Bobcats, who were the 2007 Conference Carolinas Champions as well as the NCAA DII Southeast Champions, looked to be getting back into their form.
"We have a great group of young women and, as we continue to get stronger and faster, this season should be really special," said Head Coach Craig McPhail.
Junior Carla Swart (Buford, Ga.) ran a personal best time of 19:52 over the 3.1 mile course. Gina Valenti (Washington, N.C.), another junior, had a good race, running a 20:31. Dana Lindholm (Weaverville, N.C.) finished third on the team while Ashley May (Chilhowie, Va.) was fourth for the Lady Bobcats. Sophomore Kira Shoemaker (Atlanta, Ga.) and junior April Harris (Jonesville, Va.) rounded out the Bobcats top six performers.
"I thought we ran under control. We might have gone out a bit fast, but it was nerves. Now we can settle into quality training," McPhail said.
The Bobcats will race this weekend in Spartanburg, S.C. at the Eye Opener meet at Milliken Park.
